{"id":4879,"date":"2013-05-02T22:01:00","date_gmt":"2013-05-02T22:01:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2020-08-01T15:29:30","modified_gmt":"2020-08-01T20:29:30","slug":"iron-man-comics-sales-history-updated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/comichron.com\/blog\/2013\/05\/02\/iron-man-comics-sales-history-updated\/","title":{"rendered":"Iron Man comics sales history updated, 1968-present"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: right;\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/CCIronMan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/comichron.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IronMan1-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/div>\n<p>With the release of the third <i><b><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/CCIronMan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Iron Man<\/a> <\/span><\/b><\/i><span style=\"font-size: small;\">film, <span style=\"font-size: small;\">I&#8217;ve updated one of the f<span style=\"font-size: small;\">eatures here on the s<span style=\"font-size: small;\">ite:<\/span><\/span><\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comichron.com\/titlespotlights\/ironman.html\"><b>postal statement sales figures for the main series<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\">.<\/span><\/span> The main Iron Man series, <span style=\"font-size: small;\">as Marvel<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> <span style=\"font-size: small;\">numbers the issues<\/span><\/span><\/span>, unifies several distinct runs<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> going all the way back to the first Iron Man <span style=\"font-size: small;\">title in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comichron.com\/yearlycomicssales\/1968.html\"><b>1968<\/b><\/a>.<b> <\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"font-family: inherit;\">\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">When Marvel renegotiated its restrictive agreement with its distributor th<span style=\"font-size: small;\">at<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> year,<\/span><\/span> it was suddenly able to increase its number of offerings. It did so by drawing upon the characters in several of its &#8220;double feature&#8221; titles. <span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">Iron Man<\/span> and <span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">Captain America<\/span> fissioned from <span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">Tales of Suspense<\/span>, with <i>Captain America<\/i> continuting the original series&#8217; numbering. <i>Iron Man<\/i> began with a fresh #1, only after a weird one-month gap during which the feature was paired with the <span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">Tales to Astonish<\/span> orphan, Sub-Mariner, in the <span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">Iron Man and Sub-Mariner<\/span> one-shot.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Marvel did not publish sales figures for the title for a very long time, but by the time it did, <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Iron Man<\/span> was a mid-range seller along with the other Avengers titles. The series peaked above 200,000 copies in the mid-1980s during <b>David Michelinie<\/b> and <b>Bob Layton<\/b>&#8216;s first run on the title; it approached that level again several times before collapsing during the market recession of the mid-1990s.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/CCIronMan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/comichron.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/WarMachine-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Marvel addressed the decline then \u2014 and several more times \u2014 with the same strategy: restarting the series from a new #1. The &#8220;Heroes Reborn&#8221; volume 2 and the &#8220;Heroes Return&#8221; volume 3 resuscitated sales (and began a run that, later on, included<b>\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.farawaypress.com\/comics\/ironman.html\"><b>my own year on the title<\/b><\/a>). The <b>Warren Ellis<\/b> Volume 4 reboot in 2004 similarly gave a big boost to sales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That title was officially renamed <i><b>Invincible Iron Man<\/b><\/i> in the indicia with #17 in 2007 and then <i><b>Iron Man Director of SHIELD<\/b><\/i> with #29 in 2008. That title ran until #35, but a concurrent <b><i>Invincible Iron Man<\/i><\/b> series had already started from #1 earlier that summer. It was that title that, after <i>Invincible Iron Man<\/i> #33, assumed the numbering from all the earlier series and continued with #500 in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>(Which complicates matters even further, since all those comics added up to 503 issues. The rationale \u2014 further described <a href=\"https:\/\/comichron.com\/blog\/2011\/11\/iron-man.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>here<\/b><\/a> \u2014 was that the last three issues of <i>Director of SHIELD<\/i> had <i><b>War Machine<\/b><\/i> on their logos. That&#8217;s so, but the indicias never changed, and in fact, the <i>Iron Man Director of SHIELD<\/i> Statement of Ownership ran in that third &#8220;War Machine issue.&#8221; But if it&#8217;s weird to not count Director of SHIELD #33-35, it&#8217;s odd to count #29-32, as well, as those issues were coming out concomitant with the series that numerically would have followed.
