And one of the political conventions ultimately wasn&#8217;t even held in San Diego!<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/comichron.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/cbg14-1.jpg\" width=\"199\" height=\"320\" border=\"0\" \/><\/div>\n<p>1996 saw a straightforward scheduling conflict, as the RNC booked the center during what was then the convention&#8217;s mid-August dates; the show moved to July 4, instead. But the more curious happenstance involved 1972, when Richard Nixon&#8217;s nominating convention caused some uncertainty beforehand for organizers.<\/p>\n<p>In an ad in<b> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbgxtra.com\/cbg-index\/1972-issues\/cbg-index-14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>The Buyer&#8217;s Guide for Comic Fandom<\/i> #14<\/a><\/b> (cover-dated April 1972), the precursor to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbgxtra.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><b>Comics Buyer&#8217;s Guide<\/b><\/i><\/a>, organizers of the third annual <b>San Diego West Coast Comics Convention<\/b> sounded an apologetic note. &#8220;For various reasons, one of which <i>was<\/i> the Republican convention, a definite date has yet to be established.&#8221; The italics were in order because by April, the political event had become embroiled in the ITT scandal \u2014 in which a payment to defray costs for the San Diego RNC event was tied to an antitrust decision involving International Telephone and Telegraph.<\/p>\n<p>Little remembered by any but the most knowledgeable politicos, the scandal \u2014 and its impact on San Diego \u2014 is described in detail in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sandiegohistory.org\/journal\/92fall\/elephants.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>&#8220;When the Elephants Marched Out of Town,&#8221;<\/b><\/a> in the<b> <i>Journal of San Diego History<\/i><\/b>. (Another point of view on it \u2014 which brings things full circle to comics \u2014 can be found in a comics story by <b>Leonard Rifas<\/b> and <b>Peter Poplaski<\/b> in the underground <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/story\/2010\/05\/15\/866539\/-Underground-Comix-Corporate-Crime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><b>Corporate Crime Comics #1.)<\/b><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/comichron.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/corporatecrime11-1.jpg\" width=\"141\" height=\"200\" border=\"0\" \/><\/div>\n<p>The Republican National Committee voted unanimously on May 5, 1972 to move the convention back to Miami, where it had been in 1968; it would not return to Florida until this week. That date suggests that perhaps<i> The Buyer&#8217;s Guide<\/i> issue might have shipped in May rather than April; the magazine, which would actually run a McGovern ad, of all things, later in the year, went biweekly in August.<\/p>\n<p>The San Diego West Coast Comics Convention, meanwhile \u2014 today&#8217;s Comic-Con \u2014 moved to August 18-21, overlapping with the RNC&#8217;s Miami event from Aug. 21-23. It found digs in the El Cortez hotel, which the convention would remain to seven more times.
