Haley<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<p>\nFollowing the report on comics orders for <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.comichron.com\/2010\/05\/calendar-deals-beating-to-april-2010.html\"><b>April 2010<\/b><\/a>, here&#8217;s a look back at what was going on in previous years&#8230;<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.comichron.com\/monthlycomicssales\/2008\/2008-12.html\" onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/comichron.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/200904DetectiveComics853-1.jpg\" width=\"129\" \/><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: red; font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">April 2009<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8216;s top seller was DC&#8217;s <i><b>Detective Comics #853<\/b><\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, with estimated first-month Diamond orders of <\/span>104,100 copies. The <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Neil Gaiman<\/span> issue performed an interesting feat: as Comichron reported, it was the first time an issue of <i>Detective<\/i>, the longest-running ongoing series in American comics, had ever topped the charts. <span style=\"font-size: small;\">Check out the detailed analysis of the month&#8217;s  sales <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.comichron.com\/2009\/05\/april-2009-sales-rebound-and-detective.html\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">here<\/a>  <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014 and sales chart <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.comichron.com\/monthlycomicssales\/2009\/2009-04.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">here<\/span><\/a>.<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"color: red; font-weight: bold;\">April 2005<\/span>&#8216;s top-seller was Marvel&#8217;s<b><i> New Avengers #5<\/i><\/b><i>,<\/i> with Diamond first-month orders of over 162,300 copies. But DC took the next four of the top five slots in a month where the narrower categories were flat or slightly off year-over-year. <i><b>Star Wars Episode III<\/b><\/i> helped Dark Horse to one of its higher market shares across history; the movie came out in May, but orders for the adaptation issues and trade were recorded in April. Check out the sales chart <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comichron.com\/monthlycomicssales\/2005\/2005-04.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">here<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: red; font-weight: bold;\">April 2000<\/span>&#8216;s top-seller was Image&#8217;s<i><b> Fathom #12<\/b><\/i>, with estimated Diamond preorders of approximately 124,500 copies. Image topped the charts only twice more in the 2000s, with an anniversary issue of <i><b>Spawn<\/b><\/i> and <b><i>Masters of the Universe<\/i> #1<\/b> a couple of years later.<\/p>\n<p>Also in April 2000, Marvel boosted its cover prices from $1.99 to $2.25 for most of its line, helping its market share. Check out the sales chart <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comichron.com\/monthlycomicssales\/2000\/2000-04.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">here<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/comichron.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/199504X-MenOmega-1.jpg\" width=\"132\" \/><\/div>\n<p><b style=\"color: red;\">April 1995<\/b>&#8216;s top seller at Diamond and at Capital City Distribution was Marvel&#8217;s <i><b>X-Men Omega<\/b><\/i>, the final chapter of the &#8220;Age of Apocalypse&#8221; storyline. Capital reported preorders of approximately 143,050 copies, placing overall orders north of 400,000 copies. <i>Omega<\/i> represented something close to an end to the enhanced-cover era; its acetate outer cover makes it one of those issues where online scans look nothing like the comic book!&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>The book was priced at $3.99 \u2014 and the average comic book ordered within Diamond&#8217;s Top 300 cost $2.39. The most common cost of comics was $2.50, believe it or not: Marvel and DC&#8217;s lines were scattered across several price points, including $1.50, $1.75,&nbsp; $1.95, and $2.25, whereas Image, Malibu, Dark Horse, and Acclaim had many of their comic books priced at $2.50.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: red; font-weight: bold;\">April 1990<\/span>&#8216;s top seller at Diamond and Capital City was  <span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">Legends of the Dark Knight #8,<\/span> the third issue of <b>Grant Morrison<\/b>&#8216;s &#8220;Gothic&#8221; storyline. Capital City&#8217;s orders on the issue were 84,950 copies, suggesting that overall sales were closer to half a million copies.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/comichron.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/198504SecretWarsII2-1.jpg\" width=\"134\" \/><\/div>\n<p><b style=\"color: red;\">April 1985<\/b>&#8216;s top seller at Capital City was Marvel&#8217;s<i><b> Secret Wars II #2<\/b><\/i>, the shorter sequel to 1984&#8217;s best-selling comics series. Capital&#8217;s orders were approximately 65,000 copies, suggesting overall sales in the 300,000-to-400,000-copy range.<\/p>\n<p>While the identically priced <i><b>Crisis on Infinite Earths<\/b><\/i> undeniably had a longer-term impact on its publisher&#8217;s line, <i>Secret Wars II <\/i>was nearly outselling it two-to-one at Capital in April.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by John Jackson Miller and T.M.
