{"id":5614,"date":"2009-09-10T20:28:00","date_gmt":"2009-09-10T20:28:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2020-07-28T03:06:49","modified_gmt":"2020-07-28T03:06:49","slug":"diamond-august-top-sellers-out-blackest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/comichron.com\/blog\/2009\/09\/10\/diamond-august-top-sellers-out-blackest\/","title":{"rendered":"Diamond August top sellers out: Blackest Night overtakes Cap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/www.comichron.com\/monthlycomicssales\/2009\/2009-08.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 307px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.comichron.com\/monthlycomicssales\/monthlyimages\/2009\/200908BlackestNight2.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>It&#8217;s that time again. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diamondcomics.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Diamond Comic Distributors<\/span><\/a> started the monthly roll-out of comics sales information today with its release of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comichron.com\/monthlycomicssales\/2009\/2009-08.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">top ten sellers in the month of August<\/span><\/a> for several categories. <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">DC<\/span>&#8216;s <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">Blackest Night<\/span>, which came in second place last month to Marvel&#8217;s <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">Captain America: Reborn<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">#1<\/span>, claimed the top slot with its second issue. The second Cap issue came in second place. DC took three of the top four slots, thanks to <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Batman and Robin<\/span> #3<\/span> and <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Green Lantern<\/span> #45.<\/p>\n<p><\/span>Marvel had several debuts, with <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Ultimate Comics Avengers<\/span> #1<\/span> and<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The Marvels Project<\/span> #1<\/span> making the Top 10. Eight of the top 10 comics were priced at $3.99, with the other two at $2.99.<\/p>\n<p>Image&#8217;s<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> <\/span>tenth volume of <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">Walking Dead<\/span> was the top-selling trade paperback to retailers in the month.<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><span>Marvel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> <\/span><span>led in both unit and dollar market shares, with the dollar shares at 39.7% for Marvel versus 33.16% for DC. <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Dark Horse <\/span>came in third in both categories, followed by Image and <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">IDW<\/span>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span>As we can see from the link, this is, again, just the Top 10, without order index numbers; those will follow here soon, with the actual estimates later on. In the meantime, we might note that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comichron.com\/monthlycomicssales\/2008\/2008-08.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">August 2008<\/span><\/a>, while not having any #1s in the Top 19, did have both <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">Final Crisis<\/span> and<span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\"> Secret Invasion<\/span> continuing, so it remains to be seen how well this August&#8217;s slate will compare in the aggregate. Notably, only three of the Top 10 comics last year were priced at $3.99, so it&#8217;s almost certain that the average weighted price for comics ordered will go up.<\/p>\n<p>More to come.
