{"id":5664,"date":"2009-07-03T23:08:00","date_gmt":"2009-07-03T23:08:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2020-07-28T03:07:00","modified_gmt":"2020-07-28T03:07:00","slug":"1997-comics-sales-estimates-now-fully","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/comichron.com\/blog\/2009\/07\/03\/1997-comics-sales-estimates-now-fully\/","title":{"rendered":"1997 comics sales estimates now fully online"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 150px; height: 231px;\" src=\"https:\/\/comichron.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/199712Darkness11-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5354361777816394002\" border=\"0\" \/>The Diamond comics rankings and estimates for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comichron.com\/monthlycomicssales\/1997.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">1997<\/span><\/a> are now finally online here with the addition of pages for <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.comichron.com\/monthlycomicssales\/1997\/1997-10.html\">October<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comichron.com\/monthlycomicssales\/1997\/1997-11.html\">November<\/a>, <\/span>and<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comichron.com\/monthlycomicssales\/1997\/1997-12.html\">December 1997<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a period that saw major drops year-over-year against some pretty big events \u2014 November 1997 unit and dollar sales were off more than a quarter (!) versus the Superman wedding month of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comichron.com\/monthlycomicssales\/1996\/1996-11.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">November 1996<\/span><\/a>. But December also included the year&#8217;s top-seller, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Darkness<\/span> #11<\/span>, which with its eleven covers proved the death of the variant-cover craze was greatly exaggerated. And the quarter included the &#8220;Heroes Return&#8221; relaunches, setting some of Marvel&#8217;s flagship titles off on their third volumes.<\/p>\n<p>I also discovered that the Diamond Final Order Market Shares actually began two months earlier than I figured, in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comichron.com\/monthlycomicssales\/1997\/1997-09.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">August 1997<\/span><\/a>. Beginning with the October shares, the market shares appeared in Diamond&#8217;s <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">Dateline<\/span> retailer newsletter \u2014 but the August and September shares appeared in Diamond&#8217;s Dialogue magazines for October and November.
