{"id":5817,"date":"2009-02-12T18:03:00","date_gmt":"2009-02-12T18:03:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2020-07-28T03:07:48","modified_gmt":"2020-07-28T03:07:48","slug":"diamond-january-2009-obama-issue-adds-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/comichron.com\/blog\/2009\/02\/12\/diamond-january-2009-obama-issue-adds-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Diamond January 2009: Obama issue adds $1 mil+ to market"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Beginning the release of information for January 2009, Diamond has released its market shares and top sellers for the month \u2014 and as expected, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Amazing Spider-Man #583<\/span>, the Barack Obama issue, led the charts:<\/p>\n<p>1 ) Amazing Spider-Man #583 \u2022 $3.99 \u2022 Marvel Comics<br \/>2) Dark Avengers #1 \u2022 $3.99 \u2022 Marvel Comics<br \/>3) Final Crisis #6 \u2022 $3.99 \u2022 DC Comics<br \/>4) Final Crisis #7 \u2022 $3.99 \u2022 DC Comics<br \/>5) New Avengers #49 \u2022 $3.99 \u2022 Marvel Comics<br \/>6) Captain America #46 \u2022 $2.99 \u2022 Marvel Comics<br \/>7) Batman #685 \u2022 $2.99 \u2022 DC Comics<br \/>8) Astonishing X-Men #28 \u2022 $2.99 \u2022 Marvel Comics<br \/>9) Justice League of America #29 \u2022 $2.99 \u2022 DC Comics<br \/>10) Buffy the Vampire Slayer #21 \u2022 $2.99 \u2022 Dark Horse Comics<\/p>\n<p>Looking at the market share, word from retailers, and other information at hand, I feel confident that <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.comichron.com\/2009\/01\/will-obama-save-january.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">my initial hunch was close to correct<\/span><\/a>, and that<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> the issue&#8217;s sales roughly quintupled<\/span> across all versions. (I&#8217;d figured somewhere between quadrupling and quintupling \u2014 with the new printings increasingly piling on more.) That would put the issue&#8217;s direct-market sales in the mid 300,000s \u2014 and add a little more than $1 million to the market for the month. Again, this would have the effect of offsetting a 4% drop in unit sales elsewhere, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.comichron.com\/2009\/01\/challenge-of-january-part-ii.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">should January be its usual slow self.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>How does this answer my own question of <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.comichron.com\/2009\/02\/where-will-obama-issue-rank-in-spider.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">how the issue would rank in Spider-history<\/span><\/a>? Unless the newsstand adds more than I&#8217;m expecting (I think it initially got the &#8220;cougar&#8221; cover, but I don&#8217;t know for sure), it&#8217;ll be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comichron.com\/titlespotlights\/amazingspiderman.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">better than anything in the last 15 years<\/span><\/a>, and up there past most of the 1960s and 1970s issues, too.
