June 2021 completed the first the first full year that Diamond no longer was distributing DC comics. Lunar Distribution shipped 60 new DC comic books during the five-shipping-week month, by far the largest number for DC in 2021. Consequently, it appears to have been the best month for initial orders since the Coronavirus pandemic began impacting the Direct Market in early 2020,

Once all cardstock variants were merged, Batman #109 appeared to be the top comic for the publisher in initial order units. DC Pride #1, priced at $9.99, was the top DC dollar book. DC appears to have sold well over 2 million copies of its new comic books in initial orders, for more than $11 million.

Our retail order sample only looked at initial orders, so a release like Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #1, underordered by retailers by retailers back in April, does not recur in the charting below as it might have done in a traditional Diamond chart.

As had been the case since its inception, Lunar did not report anything about its sales. Given the lack of official information, Comichron has drawn upon a subset of known retail orders both to determine approximate rankings. The subset represents a sizable number of copies; only initial orders for periodicals were examined. No statistical adjustments have been made for returnability and no later returns have been subtracted out.

The chart below features every new comic book released by DC in June 2021. Variant editions have been merged into single entries, following longtime industry practice. The release dates are from Lunar. Note, further, that our process only looks at first-month orders for comics, so no reordered titles from the month before or reprints appear in the chart below.

NOTE: As of June 2021 — one year into DC's exclusivity with Lunar — we're retiring separate rankings for DC. The DC issues can already be found in the overall ranking charts, sorted with other publishers — and the other reason is that Lunar around this time began to offer other publishers' comics, beginning with Scout. That increases the chance for confusion here our retailer initial order sample does not differentiate between whether retailers ordered from Diamond or from Lunar. The DC charts could be interpreted as tracking Lunar's sales while it was the sole publisher there, but cannot function in that manner when publishers have multiple distributors. A Scout comics order might have come from Diamond, or it might have come from Lunar — we don't ask which, just as we didn't in May and June 2020 when Diamond still offered DC alongside Lunar and UCS.

So as to prevent confusion, this will be the last page breaking out DC's sales at Lunar — unless and until Lunar begins releasing its own charts.

Things to remember: Rankings in these charts should also be expected to differ — often significantly — from the sales-to-consumers charts available at other outlets. Those report sell-through and not sell-in, and different retailers are sampled in each, with no known overlap in reporting stores as of the generation of the below charts.
