May 1993 Comic Book Sales to Comics Shops

Comics Preordered by North American Comics Shops
Based on Reports from Diamond Comic Distributors

The boom of the 1990s in the Direct Market reached its peak the month before in April 1993, but nobody knew it yet as the summer approached. The top five comics from Diamond very much typify what was going on in the era: All issues are from Image or Valiant, two of the top five are "zero" issues, and three of the top five had foil covers. X-O Manowar #0 had a foil wraparound cover, while Shadowhawk II #1 had a black foil cover that is essentially irreproducible.

Marvel took first place in market share, despite having only one title in the Top 20: X-Factor #92, in seventh. It achieved that feat by continuing to flood the market; Marvel had 114 releases in the Top 300.

DC, after a record-setting April with the "Return of Superman" from his death in late 1992, fell back into third place behind Marvel and Image at Diamond just one month later. It still led the other publishers in backlist items — graphic novels, that it — but those were still a very small portion of the market.

Diamond's market shares are complicated by the fact that noncomics merchandise from comics publishers was included in the mix; that explains why Topps has a much higher dollar share than it had a unit share. Topps published the WildC.A.T.S Trading Card Series in the month of May, and that heavily impacted the market shares. WildC.A.T.S Trilogy #1 placed second in comics overall.

May 1993 saw the first graphic novel collections appearing for several of the newer series.X -O Manowar was in first, followed by Savage Dragon.

Currently, only the order index numbers Diamond released for each issue are available on this page; they are keyed to Amazing Spider-Man's sales. The order index figure published below is the number of copies retailers altogether preordered from Diamond for every 100 copies they ordered of Amazing Spider-Man #379. Our back-of-the-envelope estimate suggests every point on the chart may equal 1,800 copies, but remember that Diamond was only one of several distributors. More detailed estimates are forthcoming.
