April 1998 was a lackluster month in all regards, with comics preorders in the Top 300 off a full 25% from the previous April.
Retailer reports to Comics Retailer magazine found high levels of sell-through for Superman Forever, Battle Chasers, and Spirit: The New Adventures, which would be the last hit for Kitchen Sink before its closure.
Most notably, Diamond, reflecting the increased importance of trade paperbacks, began listing indexed sales for its Top 25.

The first Top 25 Trade Paperback list was led by an adult title — and one which wasn't really a trade paperback, but rather a higher-priced comic, Verotik Illustrated #3. Often, comics over a certain cover price wound up in the graphic novel charts; this was the case as well, early on, with off variants like the $4 Vampi aschan editon below.
