1994 Comic Book Sales to Comics Shops
Comics Ordered by North American Comics Shops as Reported
by Diamond Comic Distributors and Capital City Distribution
The comics industry went into freefall in 1994, with more than 1,000 accounts closing in January. The drumbeat of retail closures sent shockwaves through the system, hitting distributors and publishers alike. Marvel bought Malibu, removing one of the Big Six publishers.
By the end of 1994, forces were set in motion that would end the time of multiple distributors, as Marvel bought Heroes World Distribution the last week of the year.
In 1994, comics were sold to comics shops by several different major distributors who carried all publishers' comics. Diamond Comic Distributors and Capital City Distribution were the largest of them; Diamond's Top Sellers for the year can be found immediately below. Diamond and Capital's monthly top-sellers can be found at the bottom of the page. Diamond did not publish aggregated unit shares for the year, only dollar shares; these appear in the column at left, along with Capital City's unit and dollar shares.
Diamond's reported top-seller is a puzzler, as Violator #1 only placed third in the month of its release — behind Spawn #22, which appears ninth below — and Capital City ranked it only 23rd for the year. Either there were many reorders exclusive to Diamond, or the ranking is in error. Capital ranked Generation X #1 in first and Spawn/Batman second, and as the latter book had the same rank at Diamond, Spawn/Batman is likely the top seller for the year in the Direct Market. Diamond's #3 book, Codename: Stryke Force #1, is another puzzler, as it came out in December 1993, when it placed fifth. It didn't appear in Capital's 1994 list at all.
