The collapse following the peak year of 1993 got fully underway in January, as a reported 1,000 comics-ordering accounts closed at the start of the year. The month also saw the sale of Moondog's, one of the largest comics chains, to Dream Factory to create the largest comics shop chain in the country.

Independent publisher Innovation folded during the month, and Diamond Comic Distributors and Capital City Distribution further tightened their grace periods for late-shipping comics to deal with the epidemic of late shipping.
