August 2015 comics orders up 7%; strong market heading into Marvel’s relaunch

Four years ago, August saw the comics market slumping in the days before the DC relaunch invigorated the market. Comics sales in July 2011 were down 7% for the year-to-date. The first day of the DC relaunch, August 31 with Justice League #1, erased half that deficit — and the year would go on to recover most of the rest of it, finishing nearly flat, mostly because of a year-long weakness in graphic novels that could not be fully erased.

By contrast, August 2015, in advance of the Marvel line relaunch, saw comic shop managers ordering $43.81 million in comic books, graphic novels, and magazines, according to Comichron’s analysis of data released this morning by Diamond Comic Distributors. That brings the total for the year to approximately $378.1 million, an increase of $34 million over the same period in 2014.

So that’s in the bank, before we get to whatever action the Marvel line relaunch generates in the fall. The year is already up nearly 10%. And while the pace of growth slowed in July and August, the industry is starting from a larger base of revenue this time around. Orders for 2011 through August, including the one-day Justice League numbers, were $259 million; today’s market is 46% larger, amounting to nearly $120 million difference. That’s not all inflation, folks; retailers are moving well over a million more comic books a month than they did in the pre-DC-relaunch summer of 2011.
